Unexpected Ways to Calm Your Nerves Before a Job Interview
It’s natural to flip out before an interview—take a deep breath and try one of these easy stress-reliever
Interviews can be stressful and feeling nervous is completely normal, but there are some tried and tested ways we’ve seen LinkedIn members share on the platform to help you calm your nerves.
It’s obvious but don’t take it for granted: preparation is key. Do your research – with enough time – on the company, the job, and who is interviewer ; be sure to take a look at their LinkedIn profile so you can gain an understanding of their past experiences. Knowing more about your interviewer’s background before you meet them can really help to put you at ease.
“Be confident in your skills and your ability. Remind yourself that you have been chosen for the interview because of your personality and experience.”
Job interviews and nerves often go in hand, but those nerves are not invincible. One of the easiest ways to calm your nerves before an interview is be prepared as possible. Preparation helps you anticipate what will happen during an interview, which helps lighten some of that fear. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll be going into the interview. There are almost infinite ways to do this, so I’ve highlighted some of the most effective ways here.
Hold a mock interview
Find a friend to give you a mock interview, you can practice giving your answers in real time. This will help you get easy with the format and allow you to try out various answers and hacks.
Chew gum (but remember to spit it out)
While you should never walk into an interview with gum in your mouth, chewing on something fresh before your meeting might help relieve stress. Participants reported less anxiety while chewing gum, and their saliva had lower levels of cortisol—the stress hormone.
Choose tea over coffee
If you are feeling nervous, a cup of coffee may only increase your heart-rate, especially if you’re induce to an anxiety disorder. Instead, opt for a black tea before your meeting—caffeine can make you apprehensive, worsen nerves, and cause you to fumble while speaking.
Know how to answer the most common interview questions
There are some questions that come up in every job interview, so prepare yourself to answer them with ease. Some of the most common questions are:
- What are your strength and weakness?
- Why are you interested in this position?
Go for a walk
Exercise is one of the easiest stress relievers—“meditation in motion”—but if you’re already sweating from nerves, a run won’t help. Instead, go for a quick walk before your interview to boost endorphins and help you feel more confident.
